Our Mission
The mission of sustainability initiatives at NJIT is to help guide our community become more sustainable and drive pathway towards carbon neutrality. These initiatives are developed in order to create a culture of faculty, staff and students who are socially, economically and environmentally responsible.
Our Vision
We strive to integrate sustainability into the core mission of the university through teaching, research, service. We are committed to projects that make efficient use of our resources in order to create a more sustainable campus and community.
Who We Are

Prabhakar Shrestha Dr. Shrestha joined NJIT as the Assistant Director of Sustainability in February 2022. Dr. Shrestha is leading NJIT's effort to be carbon neutral while also ensuring that sustainability is a norm at the university. He is responsible for the development, coordination, and implementation of sustainability programs and policies at NJIT. In his free time, Dr. Shrestha enjoys spending time with his family exploring NJ and the tri-state area. He is an avid pickleball player. |

Shreya Agrawal Shreya Agrawal, a student in the Master of Science in Architecture program, has a passion for sustainable design that extends beyond the academic realm. As an active member of the Office of Sustainability at NJIT, she plays a pivotal role in shaping the institution's Climate Action Plan. Her responsibilities include not only contributing to the development of the plan but also spearheading initiatives to raise awareness and foster a culture of sustainability throughout the campus. With a keen interest in sustainable design, Shreya is committed to making a positive impact on the environment and promoting a greener future for her academic community. |

Audrey Kormann Audrey is a sophomore undergraduate majoring in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Environmental Engineering. As a Sustainability Specialist Intern for the Office of Sustainability, her focus is on recycling and composting projects, as well as promoting a culture of sustainable action among the student body. Outside of the office she started an environmental club in her high school, and currently does research on the efficiency of anaerobic composting with the goal of implementing an effective system into the dining hall. As a student of NJIT she also plays for the university’s basketball team. |

Julia Navarro Julia is a sophomore undergraduate majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Environment and Sustainability Studies. She is the Office of Sustainability’s lead graphic designer and social media and event manager. She works on campus environmental initiatives with a specific focus on biodiversity, and her goal is to use art and technology to help the environment as well as communities disproportionately affected by climate change. Outside of the Office she is also a research assistant at the Urban Ecology Lab. She likes rock music, drawing, and winning in Mario Kart 8. |

Ojas Purandare Ojas is a sophomore undergraduate majoring in Business and Information Systems and serves as the lead specialist for process improvement in campus operations. His work involves collaborating with multiple departments across the university and utilizing data-driven analysis to enable optimized energy use, reduced emissions, and more. Additionally, he is responsible for coordinating with third-party certification programs, namely STARS, to help keep track of metrics such as emissions and waste production, while also setting feasible goals to achieve higher sustainability ratings. In his free time, he can be found finishing all of the thai tea on campus. |

Emmanuel Cruzat Emmanuel is a sophomore undergraduate majoring in Computer Science. His work in compiling data on NJIT finances and sustainable policy will be critical to completing the upcoming STARS 3.0 survey. The data he collects is also important in the evaluation of NJIT’s fulfillment of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. His work will help with the development of sustainable policy and guidelines and he has already played a role in developing training for staff in sustainable practices. In his free time he plays the trombone, which he has been playing for 8 years. |

Sebastian Vargas Sebastian is a sophomore undergraduate majoring in Data Science Computing Option with a minor in Game Development. He is the sustainability specialist in charge of collecting data on campus sustainability engagement for the upcoming STARS 3.0 survey. His work has also been critical in highlighting the institution’s efforts towards fulfilling the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. As someone who believes in leveraging digital media for the engagement of a wider audience in sustainability, he is also the primary manager of the sustainability website. In his free time, he likes to paint birds and bugs with watercolor. |
